Ground Beef and Gravy over Mashed Potatoes
Ingredients
For the Ground Beef & Gravy:
1 lb (450g) ground beef
1 small onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
Salt & pepper, to taste
2 tbsp butter
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
2 cups beef broth (or 1 cup broth + 1 cup water & bouillon)
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce (optional but yum!)
Fresh thyme or parsley for garnish (optional)
For the Mashed Potatoes:
2 lbs potatoes (Yukon Gold or Russet work best), peeled and cubed
Salt, for boiling
4 tbsp butter
½–¾ cup milk (warm)
Garlic powder or roasted garlic (optional)
Shredded cheese (optional if you want cheesy mash!)
Directions
Make the Mashed Potatoes:
Place cubed potatoes in a large pot and cover with cold water. Add a generous pinch of salt.
Boil until tender (about 15–20 minutes). Drain and return to the pot.
Add butter and warm milk, mash until smooth and creamy.
Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder to taste.
(Optional: stir in cheese for cheesy goodness!)
Cook the Beef and Make the Gravy:
In a skillet, cook ground beef over medium heat until browned. Break it up with a spoon as it cooks.
Add onion and cook until soft. Stir in garlic and cook 30 seconds more.
Push meat to the side, melt butter in the pan, and sprinkle in flour. Stir and cook for 1 minute (make a quick roux!).
Slowly pour in beef broth, whisking until smooth.
Stir everything together, add Worcestershire sauce, and simmer until thickened (about 5–7 minutes).
Taste and season with salt & pepper.
To Serve:
Spoon a big scoop of mashed potatoes onto each plate or bowl. Ladle that savory beef gravy right over the top. 🤤
Garnish with fresh parsley or thyme if you’re feelin’ fancy. 🌿
