Grandma Phebe’s Chop Suey

Ingredients

1/2 pound Lean pork cut into small pieces
1/2 pound lean beef cut into small pieces
2 Tbs Shortening
1/2 cup onions, sliced into thin strips
1/2 cup bell pepper, sliced into thin strips
1 cup celery, sliced in ¼-inch diagonal
1/2 cup tomatoes, diced
1 can sliced mushrooms
1 can bean sprouts
1 small can bamboo shoots
1 small can water chestnuts
2 tbs molasses
3 Tbs soy sauce
1 Tbs syrup
water

Directions

In skillet add 1 Tbs shortening and allow to melt. Add pork and beef and cook until well browned. Set aside.

In a soup pot add 1 Tbs shortening and allow to melt. Add onions and green peppers and cook until limp. Add remaining ingredients plus the cooked meat. Add water to cover.

Simmer until thickened a little.

Serve over rice or chow mien noodles.
